In today’s world of cosmetic surgery, surgeons are using smaller incisions during their procedures, which mean less healing time is needed as part of the recovery process.

When you return home after having breast implant surgery you will need rest to give your body time to recover.

Being prepared beforehand and knowing what to expect will expedite your recovery.

What to expect post-surgery

  • Except to experience some pain and discomfort, swelling and bruising immediately after breast implant surgery. It is normal for you to feel as if your breathing is restricted, or for your chest to feel tight or to experience twinges.
  • These symptoms can be alleviated by taking painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. It is likely that you will be prescribed painkillers and appropriate medications such as antibiotics to prevent infection before you are discharged from hospital. Taking any pain medication as prescribed, even if you are not in pain helps keep your body pain free and will enable you to stay comfortable, minimize any swelling and heal faster.
  • Your surgeon will also give you specific advice about any activities you need to avoid such as needing to avoid excessive use of your arms as it may cause irritation and bleeding to the area. Generally you should take a week or two off work and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least a month.
  • Eat light foods at first – Since anesthesia can upset your stomach it would be wise to avoid larger meals for a day or two.
  • Make sure to drink plenty of water to keep your body’s digestion moving too.
  • Your bandages may also need changing at certain times throughout the day.
  • You may be required to attend some postoperative appointments so your surgeon can monitor your recovery.

Remember, any surgery is not without risk or complications, however as the days preceding your surgery turn into weeks your symptoms will subside. If you have been diligent in following the postoperative instructions that your surgeon and nursing staff have given you, you will not compromise your breast augmentation recovery or results.

Your surgeon will also recommend you wear a well-fitting bra 24 hours a day for up to three months after breast surgery.
