The Cosmetic Surgery Recovery Process

So you have finally scheduled your appointment with a cosmetic surgeon.  Regardless of the cosmetic surgery procedure you are having, it is time to prepare and look ahead to the cosmetic surgery recovery process.

Although you’re cosmetic surgeon should provide you with a set of post-surgery instructions for you to follow, it could be important for you to understand what some of those instructions may be so that you can ask pertinent questions regarding your specific surgery.

The Cosmetic Surgery Recovery Process

The importance of following directions

It is important to follow all pre and post-surgery directions as this will dramatically decrease or eliminate any dangers or risks of complications associated with undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure.

Let me give you an example.  Cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and gastric bypass surgery will require you follow certain steps and instructions prior to your surgery. This could include evidence such as a diet log of you eating healthily and starting a regular exercise plan.  Following any instructions such as these will help ensure your results are long term. Not abiding by your surgeon’s instructions pre and post-surgery may mean you regain the weight and excess fat that has been removed.  I am sure that you wouldn’t want to waste all that money you paid for your surgery.

When it comes to post-surgery instructions for surgery such as liposuction or abdominoplasty remember that cutting is involved.  Of course, your surgical entry point will be closed back up, but that still does not guarantee that your wounds will not get infected.  The risk of wound and skin infections are real and can result from improper post-operative care and can cause serious health complications.

As previously stated, it is important for you to follow the directions given to you by your cosmetic surgeon for the recovery process to limit the risks and because this will help determine the success and results of your surgery. Depending on what specific procedure you have, the detailed instructions you need to follow after your surgery will vary.   However, there are some commonalities when it comes to all surgeries such as;

Take over-the-counter pain medicines

Pain medication can be used to relieve slight pain or discomfort in the days preceding your cosmetic surgery.  Be sure to inquire as to which medications are the best.

Use an ice pack

Applying an ice pack will help reduce any swelling post-surgery.

Be required to change your bandages

You may be required to change them on a daily basis to keep them clean and dry until your follow-up appointment with your surgeon.

Avoid heavy lifting and exercising for at least two to three weeks.

This is particularly pertinent if you have had surgery on your body, had liposuction, breast enlargements or reductions.

As you can see, it is important that you follow any pre and post-surgery instructions. Remember to never be afraid to ask any questions or voice your concerns about any aspect of your surgery or about the recovery process.
