Allergy to Milk

Milk Allergy in Children

Breast milk provides a baby’s immune system with important antibodies and also lowers the baby’s risk of illness and developing an allergy to milk.

Skin Health Hub Food Allergies Allergy To MilkAlthough it is rare for baby’s to have an allergy to milk, there are babies being born with congenital lactose intolerance where both the mother and the father of the baby have passed on a defective gene that causes the allergy. In this instance, the baby isn’t able to handle any type of milk product – including breast milk.

The good news is there are commercial formulas that have been specifically developed to be lactose free so that babies who have congenital lactose intolerance are able to thrive on these formulas.

Milk Allergy Symptoms

Milk allergies occur when the immune system reacts to the proteins in the milk and the body tries to fight it off.

Babies who have milk allergy symptoms can be very miserable as they have no way of telling you exactly what’s going on. An allergic reaction can cause a baby to be fussy and irritable, they may also experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, cramps, bloating, and gas.

It’s important to pay attention to your baby’s symptoms and speak with your healthcare provider or pediatrician if your baby seems to be in a lot of pain or has chronic diarrhea when breastfeeding or using a commercial formula that is milk based.

In many cases symptoms will disappear when lactose is removed from your baby’s diet. Some children actually outgrow their intolerance while others will have it throughout their lifetimes. It’s important that you discuss with your pediatrician so you can provide your child with the appropriate diet for his or her specific intolerances or allergy to milk.
