What are allergy shots?

Allergy shots actually contain a tiny amount of the allergen that you are allergic to.  If you have multiple allergies, such as a combination of indoor and outdoor allergies, two shots may be administered -one for outdoor allergies and one for indoor allergies.

How do allergy shots work?

Allergy shots help your body fight the allergen that triggers your symptoms.  When you receive allergy shots of the allergen, your body makes antibodies to the allergen and acts to block the effects of the allergen itself thereby decreasing the severity of symptoms. Overtime allergy shots are believed to provide long term relief from symptoms.

What kinds of allergies can be treated with allergy shots?

Allergy shots are believed to work very well with allergies to pollen, for the relief of hay fever symptoms, eye allergies, bee sting allergies, some drug allergies and have also been prescribed to greatly improve asthma symptoms.

Unfortunately, not everyone is eligible for allergy shots and you should discuss whether allergy shots can form a part of your treatment with your doctor.  Your doctor may initially give you an allergy test to determine what allergies you have.  This test required some of each allergen is injected into you. Once the results are reviewed, a vaccine is made which can then be administered on a weekly or biweekly basis to relieve allergy symptoms.

After approximately 6 months you may be eligible to go on a maintenance program whereby allergy shots are only required monthly.  In some cases, people no longer need allergy shots as their immunity to the allergens has built up and symptoms no longer present.

Allergy shots are becoming a common form of treatment to build up a person’s immunity to outside allergens. This article attempted to answer the question –“Are allergy shots an effective treatment for allergies?” – You be the judge.
