Food Allergies and Allergies

Allergic reactions can occur at any time and you may be surprised to learn over ninety percent of all causes of allergic reactions are as a result of an allergen to a food.

Skin Health Hub Food Allergies Food Allergies and AllergiesReactions to food allergies, can cause adverse immune system reactions when a certain food protein is ingested.

Foods known to cause reactions are identified as the ‘big eight’ those being milk, peanuts, eggs, soy, wheat, seafood and shellfish. The scary thing is these ingredients are found in everyday food products. The message here is if you are a person allergic to them you will have to pay careful attention to everyday activities such as when shopping for groceries, dining out to social situations, food preparation and cross-contamination to avoid having an allergic reaction.

How The Body Reacts To Allergens In Food

How much the body will react when exposed to a food allergen ranges from mild irritation to anaphylaxis, which has the whole body reacting to the allergen and in its most severe form can be life-threatening.

Depending on the severity of your allergy, your reaction to a food allergen can be instantaneous or occur after a few hours after ingestion of the food containing the allergen.

In some types of reactions, you may only experience skin irritation, itchiness or mild swelling of surrounding tissue. Of course, if swelling causes obstruction in the air tract and breathing difficulties immediate medical assistance is required.

Diagnosis, Testing, And Treatment

Currently, there is no cure if you’re allergic to a certain food protein and avoidance is the only recommended course of action. If you suspect that you’re allergic to a certain food product, it would be best to consult an expert allergist. Read our article on Food Allergy Testing.
