Whether you have decided to invest in new equipment for your tattoo studio or you are starting a tattoo business from scratch before you decide how you are going to pay for it.

You need to consider the options tattoo equipment rental or leasing over buying your tattoo equipment first.

Here are some helpful information to help you decide which is best for your tattoo business.

The benefits of leasing, renting or buying your tattoo equipment.

The advantages of paying for your equipment in full at the time of purchase are:

• You ‘own’ the equipment
• You may qualify for a tax saving – depreciation
• You are not paying interest on any borrowed funds
• You are not required to make monthly payments/installments
• Paying in full may provide you with the ability to negotiate a better deal with your supplier

If however you have limited funds and your ‘working capital’ may be affected it is good to know that there are other options available. The options include: paying by credit card, obtaining a personal or business bank loan, short-term rental with a purchase option, negotiating a payment plan with the supplier, renting or leasing.

If you are purchasing furnishing and equipment of your shop fit out or purchasing higher priced items such as Autoclaves, ask your supplier if they have a relationship with a finance company to lease the equipment.

Some of the advantages of leasing are:

• A fixed monthly payment over a specified number of months is required
• At the end of the payment period a single ‘residual’ payment may be required for you to then become the owner of the equipment.

Renting is not a dirty word. In fact when you consider that you can even rent tattoo equipment for conventions to make attending tattoo expos conventions as easy and convenient as possible for tattoo artists why wouldn’t you rent even if only for a short term when you don’t need to haul all your equipment to your next convention.

Here are some more reasons to consider rental:

• Requires a fixed monthly payment to be made over a specified period
• You can negotiate a new, lower priced rental plan after the initial rental period has expired
• You can upgrade your equipment to the latest model so your equipment never breaks-down or gets that ‘outdated’ look.

Although paying in full for you tattoo equipment may be the most cost effective option, should the funds not be available at the time it’s good to know there are other perfectly acceptable options for you.
