If you don’t start by cleaning your skin then the dirt and oil from your skin will not be extracted and anything you try to put on top of your skin (think make-up or moisturizer) will be ineffective.

The three main ingredients of a cleanser are oil, water and surfactants (wetting agents). The type of cleanser you choose will depend on your skin type. If your skin is oily it may benefit from a gel, foaming cleanser or facial cleansing wipes whereas a cream cleanser may be better suited for a normal to dry skin.

You might want to try a couple of different types of cleansers before you find the one that suits you or use a different cleanser at different times of the year. Using a cleanser should be quick and easy so whether you use cotton wool pads to cleanse or you like to cleanse in the shower, you should use luke warm water as hot or cold water can both cause damage to your skin.

If you wear a lot of eye make-up you may need to invest in an oil-free eye make-up removal lotion in addition to your cleanser.


Removing dead skin cells by exfoliation is the best way to facilitate the skin’s natural maintenance process of removing skin cells which are naturally shed every 28 days. Not only that, exfoliation will also increase the effectiveness of your skin care products.

Generally, exfoliation should take place just after cleansing. So, whether you choose to exfoliate using products with exfoliating granules or by using a manual exfoliation devise to slough off dead cells be careful not to overdo it as this can lead to redness and dry patches of skin. As a guide, exfoliate 4 times per week for oily skin (particularly in hot and humid weather) and 1-2 times per week for normal/dry/sensitive skin.

This is one of the most important steps in skin care. Even if you have oily skin, you still need to moisturize. The function of your moisturizer is to seal the moisture in your skin cells and attract moisture (from air) when it is needed.

Day and night moisturizers are different as they need to perform different functions. As such, your day time moisturizer may be lighter in consistency and contain a sunscreen whilst your night cream may be thicker in consistency and contain more ‘active’ ingredients to restore and repair the skin when you sleep.

Application Tip: Your moisturizer is best applied when your skin is still damp after cleansing and toning.


This is where skin care can get complicated, but it need not be. Incorporating an eye cream, neck and décolletage cream, hand cream, sunscreen or lip balm are simply a part of your skin care equation – especially as you age.

If your time and budget allows it, have a salon facial every 4, 6 or 8 weeks apart. This will take your skin to a new level and escalate your home care routine. You can also achieve a salon facial at home by setting-up a pampering session at home. Soak in a bubble bath, apply a facial mask and relax. Moisturize your whole body with a body cream and add a serum and night cream after your mask to ‘lock-in’ hydration.
