Hormones and Skin Aging

The changes in our hormones and skin aging are different for Men and Women. In Women these changes are called menopause and in Men – andropause.

The main hormone that benefits the skin is oestrogen

Hormones And Skin Aging

Oestrogens increase collagen content and skin thickness, help maintain skin health and responsible for the skin’s moisture and overall lustre.

Oestrogen affects every organ system of the body, including the skin and its decline is evident by skin becoming thinner, the skin’s firmness and elasticity decreases, the depth of wrinkles increases and skin becomes dry. Menopause causes hypoestrogenism which exacerbates these skin aging effects.

Menopausal skin should be treated with care and aggressive treatments and the use of harsh ingredients in skin care products should be avoided so as not to sensitize the skin.   Here is our list of treatments to help counteract menopause’s signs and symptoms.

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is believed to greatly improve the skin aging that is associated with menopause.
  • Supplements containing growth factors blended with vitamins and minerals can help smoothen and tighten the skin.
  • Skin care enriched with a combination of antioxidants and vitamins can assist in refining the skins surface and evening skin tone.
  • Enzyme treatments may help stimulate the skin and restore fullness and elasticity.
  • Vitamin C Serums encourage collagen production, increases dermal hydration and restores water levels in the skin.

Now that you understand more of how the decline in hormones and skin aging in Men and Women greatly affects the skin’s appearance and rate of aging.  With a little help, there are ways to reduce the decline of these hormones and reduce the appearance of age related tell-tale signs such as loss of volume, lines and wrinkles.
