How Our Skin Ages

The formation of lines and wrinkles, skin discoloration and dehydration are the visible signs of aging we see on the outside, mostly on the face, hands and chest.  Skin also shows a loss of tone and elasticity becomes increasingly fragile, blood vessels weaken and bleed near the surface and benign lesions such as keratosis, telangiectasis and skin tags appear.  This article briefly outlines how our skin ages on the inside.

How Our Skin Ages
Collagen and elastin

The majority of skin aging occurs in the dermis.  Changes occur in the fibroblasts which are the cells responsible for the production of collagen and elastin protein fibres.  Cells begin to flatten out, cross-link and thicken. Collagen and elastin is produced at a much slower rate which impacts the skins ability to repair itself. This dermal tissue breakdown is what is associated with wrinkle formation.

The amount of hyaluronic acid (HA) that is present in the dermis starts to decrease when we are in our early 40’s.  It is believed that this change in the amount of HA in conjunction with a change in the skins barrier function is the most common cause of dehydration of the skin.  As well as dehydration in the dermis, moisture content also decreases and becomes less efficient at binding and retaining water in the epidermal stratum corneum. This results in a loss of skin firmness and we see evidence on the skins surface with the formation of fine fines.

Fortunately there are solutions to how the skin ages.  With the application of moisturizers, face serums, the regular use of exfoliants and correct sun protection, the appearance of fine lines, dehydration and skin tone can be alleviated.
