Is Resveratrol Anti Aging?

Skin aging is caused by the accumulation of free radicals – the harmful substances which ravish cell membranes and DNA, compromise the cells in our bodies, in particular our cellular batteries called mitochondria.  When we age our cells ability to rejuvenate these tiny mitochondria decreases as they become worn.

The answer to preventing and reversing skin aging and igniting the very chemicals that may be able to reinvigorate mitochondria could lie in the substance found in the skin of red grapes – Resveratrol.

Currently one of the challenges faced in topical skin care products containing resveratrol is that resveratrol is not very water soluble. As such, skin care products contain less than 1% pure resveratrol.
Until a more effective delivery system is found, higher concentrations of resveratrol in skin care formulations will not be present in high enough quantities in order for resveratrol to be fully effective in its ability to neutralize free radicals, be a protector of mitochondria and rejuvenate cells and protect the breakdown of collagen. However the potential for resveratrol to prevent and reverse skin aging is encouraging.

Experts believe that drinking red wine in moderation offers many health benefits due to due to the antioxidant, polyphenol called resveratrol found in the skin of grapes. The numerous health benefits include the ability to:

  • Assist in weight loss
  • Improve memory and reduce risk of developing Alzheimer’s
  • Raise good (HDL) cholesterol levels
  • Reduce the formation of blood clots
  • Help to prevent arterial damage caused by bad cholesterol
  • Produce changes in blood pressure
  • Help prevent osteoporosis in women

While the news relating to the question – Is Resveratrol Anti Aging? and the facts about red wine is encouraging, experts do not advocate the need to start drinking red wine, however for those who do, they can continue to do so in moderation so long as they also consume a healthy diet and take regular physical activity.  For those who don’t, resveratrol can be obtained from foods, like grapes cranberries and peanut butter.

Note: Currently scientific research on the many broad health benefits of resveratrol is still in its infancy in the laboratory and trails have only been done on animals, such as mice and rats.
