Moisturizers for Dry Skin

Each of us has a natural skin pH barrier that locks in moisture and keeps our complexions hydrated and supple.  But what happens in autumn and winter when cooler weather conditions do little to help moisturize our skin?

The Effects Winter Can Have On Dry Skin

As the air temperature cools and humidity decreases these environmental changes can have a damaging effect on the skin’s barrier so that it is no longer able to maintain the integrity and balance of the skin’s natural pH.

The good news is, the skin barrier can be restored from the inside out by taking supplements such flack seed and evening primrose oil to counter-act a change in environmental conditions as well as by topically applying a good moisturiser as part of your skincare regime.

Moisturizers For Dry Skin

Look for moisturizers for dry skin  which contain fatty acids such as; stearic acid or evening primrose oil, cholesterol and ceramides.  When these components are present in moisturizers in the right ratio they will help to keep you skin moist and healthy.

The other ingredients that should be present in a good moisturizer are divided into two main categories: Occlusives and Humectants. Occlusives are oily substances that prevent water from evaporating whereas Humectants are water-soluble agents that work like a sponge drawing water in.

This can be of great benefit in humid weather as humectants make the skin look plump. However this is reversed when the humidity decreases as humectant suck moisture from the skin.

That is why; when it comes to dryer weather conditions it is important to combine a humectants moisturizer with an occlusive moisturizer to prevent skin from dehydration.
